Real Estate
Before I graduated college in 2007, I read the book ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ and decided I was going to take every penny I earned working and start building my real estate portfolio. Everyone thought I was nuts to do this and said I should instead use my youth instead of wasting my time buying trashed houses and fixing them up with quality components so they would last for years to come with “random” people living in them.
Unfortunately, I didn’t execute on my path until 7 years later. As they say, the best time to plant a tree was [pick a number] years ago, but the next best time is now. So that’s what I did.
I formed Sprucewood Trails Management to buy, repair, and manage rental units I refurbish into homes I would be proud to live in myself.
I’ve done most everything myself at this point at least once — redone electrical, fixed plumbing, ripped out floors, put new floors in, patched drywall, put down new shingles, added GFCIs, replaced door jambs, overhauled HVAC systems, ceiling fans, concrete, and more I can’t even remember at the moment.
My portfolio currently consists of several single family homes and a few hangars. I try to buy at least 2 new doors a year, but sometimes life gets in the way. Every new door is a new project with its own personality and challenges, but you always remember your first.
